KOLKATA : An exporters association called on the West Bengal government on Saturday to consider export-import operations as essential services because these activities are part of the global supply chain.
Their request came after the state government announced that stricter lockdown standards would be implemented from Sunday to May 30 to contain the spread of COVID-19.
Export-import activities fall under the lockout, an official from the traders’ organization said.
The jute and tea sectors were allowed to operate with 30% and 50% labor force respectively over the next 15 days, he said, adding that borders were sealed and business activities were carried out. were not allowed during last year’s lockdown.
The Federation of Indian Exporters Organizations has written to West Bengal Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay asking for his intervention on the matter.
“We wrote to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, requesting permission to continue our operations with 50 percent workforce during the lockdown period, in line with other states that had viewed exports as services essential, ”an FIEO official told PTI.
The industry body said in a letter to the government that the state’s export units employ thousands of workers and have strict deadlines to fill orders.
“Otherwise, it can lead to heavy penalties, including the transfer of such orders to other competing countries.
“It is therefore necessary that the EXIM (export-import) sector is covered in the list of essential services so that the entire chain is able to operate or operate with at least 50 percent of the workforce at least for lockouts, ”FIEO said in the letter.
He also said states like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra had allowed manufacturing units to operate during the lockdown period, viewing these entities as export units as part of the provision of “essential services” and ” of continuous processing industries “.
