Geneva, October 6, 2021 – Gulf countries have come together to support COVAX, the latest commitment coming from Bahrain in the form of funding of $ 2.5 million. This means that all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states have now provided funding and / or doses to the Gavi COVAX Advance Market Commitment (Gavi COVAX AMC), the first Gulf country commitment from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at its G20. Presidency in 2020.

This new funding commitment is accompanied by other recent commitments to COVAX which bring the total of GCC commitments to US $ 221 million:

  • Ahead of the World Vaccine Summit in June 2020, during its presidency of the G20, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia pledged $ 500 million to relevant international organizations to support global efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic , and allocated $ 150 million. to support the Gavi COVAX AMC.

  • SAR 20 million ($ 5.3 million) was also pledged by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through KSrelief.

  • Saudi Arabia’s Gamers Without Borders initiative contributed $ 1.3 million in 2020 and pledged an additional $ 958,500 in August 2021. Funds are channeled to Gavi through KSrelief.

  • The State of Kuwait became a donor to Gavi in ​​August 2020 when it pledged US $ 10 million for AMC Gavi COVAX – it built on this with an additional donation in June 2021, bringing its total contribution to COVAX at US $ 50 million.

  • At the World Vaccine Summit in June 2020, Qatar pledged US $ 10 million to COVAX AMC as AMC’s new donor.

  • In June 2021, the Sultanate of Oman announced a pledge of US $ 1 million to Gavi COVAX AMC.

In addition, the UAE has pledged US $ 50 million in in-kind support for COVAX AMC and the COVID-19 Tool Access Accelerator (ACT) in general, which includes shipping 25 million doses. via COVAX and the donation of 1 million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine (Hayat-Vax).
