AISI releases September SIMA import data

Market share of finished product imports estimated at 22% in September

washington d.c. – Based on the Department of Commerce’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) today announced that applications for steel import permits for the month of September totaled 2,257,000 net tons (NT)*. This is down 9.2% from the 2,485,000 tonnes allowed recorded in August and down 10.1% from August’s final import total of 2,510,000. tonnage of import permits for finished steel in September was 1,864,000, down 10.5% from the final import total of 2,083,000 in August. For the first nine months of 2022 (including September SIMA permits and August final imports), total and finished steel imports were NT 24,234,000 and NT 19,673,000, up 4.5 % and 22.5%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2021. The estimated finished steel import market share in September was 22% and is 24% year-to-date ( YTD).

Steel imports with strong September permit increases over August final imports include steel piles (up 206%), line pipe (up 55%), standard pipe ( up 37%), structural pipes and tubes (up 30%) and oil well goods (+22%). Products with significant year-to-date (YTD) increases over the same period in 2021 include wire rod (up 59%), petroleum products (up 52%), standard tubing (up 51%), line pipe (up 44%) and cold rolled sheet (+37%).

In September, the largest applications for steel import permits were from Canada (NT526,000, down 11% from the August final), South Korea (NT290,000, up by 64%), Mexico (289,000 NT, down 40%), Brazil (211,000 NT, up 20%) and Taiwan (90,000 NT, up 9%). In the first nine months of 2022, the main suppliers were Canada (5,236,000 NT, down 1%), Mexico (4,188,000 NT, up 27%) and South Korea (2,228 000 NT, up 7%).

*Note that import permit data are tonnage counts requested in steel product import license applications and not actual import volumes. For a number of reasons, permit tonnages may underestimate or overestimate actual import volumes for the month, preliminary estimates of which will be available later this month.
